Joe Schoen on Daniel Jones: QB decision will be based solely on football

Giants head coach Brian Daboll has answered most of the questions about quarterback Daniel Jones’ future within the organization this season, but general manager Joe Schoen had the opportunity to give his thoughts on what the team plans to do with Jones on Tuesday.

Daboll said Sunday and Monday that the team would evaluate its options at quarterback during this week’s bye, which left the door open for a move for Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito when they return to action in Week 12. The offense’s lack of production leads the reasons why they would make such a move, but Jones’ $23 million in injury guarantees for next season aren’t far behind on the list.

Schoen said Jones’ contract would not factor into any picks and that “the decisions we make will be football decisions.” Schoen also pointed out that Jones isn’t the only problem for the 2-8 team he, Daboll and others have assembled this offseason.

“It’s everyone. Everyone I have a helping hand in that,” Schoen said.

Schoen has had more influence in the state of the Giants than many others and the call to extend Jones two years ago did not work to his advantage.
