Representatives of Turkish human rights and equality institutions strengthen their skills in monitoring immigration detentions

Thirty-eight staff members from the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (HREIT) have improved their capacity to monitor places of migrant detention. This follows a two-day training held in Ankara on October 21-22. Organized within the framework of the joint action of the European Union and the Council of Europe “Strengthening the protection of human rights in the context of migration in Türkiye“, the training aimed to ensure that detention conditions meet international and European human rights standards.

In his opening speech, Professor Kılıç, President of HREIT, highlighted the valuable cooperation between the Council of Europe and HREIT in these training efforts.

Mr William Massolin, Head of the Council of Europe Program Office in Ankara, highlighted the essential role of effective monitoring in ensuring that detention conditions comply with international and European human rights standards. man, thus guaranteeing the dignity and humane treatment of people detained for migration reasons.

The training improved participants’ knowledge of international and national legal frameworks regarding migrant detention. It also allowed them to develop their practical skills, including interview techniques, evidence collection, data collection and inspection documentation. Through interactive sessions and case studies, participants applied these techniques to real-world scenarios, improving their ability to monitor and report on places of migrant detention.

This initiative aims to improve the effectiveness of HREIT staff in their supervisory functions, thereby contributing to a more humane and equitable immigration detention system.

The action “Strengthening the protection of human rights in the context of migration in Türkiye» is part of the joint program of the European Union and the Council of Europe “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey”.
