Tesla Cybertruck faces sixth recall this year, this time due to bad inverter

The Tesla Cybertruck has been recalled for the sixth time this year – and the fix won’t involve a simple software update.

Tesla voluntarily issued a recall for approximately 2,431 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 6, 2023 and July 30, 2024. The problem is related to so-called metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors, or MOSFETs, in which the inverter has the potential to stop creating torque, resulting in a loss of truck propulsion.

There is no warning before the loss of propulsion, but a visual alert will appear on the central touchscreen asking the driver to pull the truck over to the side of the road. Tesla is sending notices to affected Cybertruck owners and plans to begin replacing the inverters with working MOSFETs after Dec. 9, according to the recall notice. Tesla said it is aware of five warranty claims related to the problem, but no collisions or injuries.

Since its release late last year, the Cybertruck has become an instantly iconic vehicle, a symbol of the broader culture war, a surprisingly good sales success for Tesla (although it may not last long), and a permanent headache thanks to its many faults.
