Darcy Graham scores four goals as Scotland beat Fiji in nine tries

Scotland’s defense against the gathering Fijian power was weak. Hastings scored a penalty, Tom Jordan made an excellent start after Rowe was unlucky to be on the end of a howitzer tackle and Ashman came back.

A storm weathered? Not really. Mali Derenalagi won before the break and it was deserved. Tevita Ikanivere scored just after the break and it was also deserved.

It was a cheeky move in front of a lineout, a clever one-two, then a terrible decision from man of the match Graham in defense. Ikanivere walked past him as if he wasn’t there and suddenly it was 29-15.

Just before that score, Ashman went high into the tackle and was lucky not to get a second yellow, or even a straight red. We spoke to him and warned him, but he should have left.

Scotland’s response to the Fiji threat was impressive. A fantastic team try saw Jones cut a fine line to allow Graham to complete his hat-trick.

Soon after, Graham scored his fourth goal with substitutes Dylan Richardson and Jamie Dobie playing an influential role, helping to weaken Fiji’s resistance. The conversion made the score 43-17.

It became 50 when a speedy Scotland struck again, Hastings’ delicious offload in midfield putting them on track and Jones put Van der Merwe through.

Scotland continued to attack and scored again in the dying seconds when Hastings, another major player, delivered a cross-kick for Jones, who was in acres of space on the right wing.

Hastings converted and Scotland had the promising start to the autumn they were looking for.
