Grizzlies favorite Zach Edey to win Rookie of the Year award

The 2024 NBA Draft was considered one of the weakest drafts in recent memory. To start the season, only four rookies averaged ten or more points per game. Those four rookies are Zach Edey, Bub Carrington, Zaccharie Risacher and Jaylen Wells.

Alex Sarr is the second closest as he averages just under ten points per game. It’s still early November so a lot can change between now and April, but there’s no clear favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award. Let’s review the best signings so far.

7-foot-5 center and No. 9 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Zach Edey, has been the best rookie in the NBA this year. The two-time National Player of the Year award winner has started in virtually every game for the Memphis Grizzlies and has looked absolutely dominant when staying out of trouble.

Per 36 minutes, he averages 20.7 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. If Edey is able to avoid fouls, he could legitimately end up averaging every 36 minutes. The combination of elite size, touch and footwork is very difficult for opposing teams to deal with. It also helps that he’s paired with an elite point guard in Ja Morant.

The Washington Wizards have a very exciting young core coming out of the 2024 NBA Draft, led by Alex Sarr. What if I told you Sarr wasn’t even their best signing this year at this point. Bub Carrington, the 14th pick in the draft, has looked really impressive for the Wizards this season.

So far, he is averaging 10.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. He has shown solid shooting ability from the perimeter, good playmaking skills and plays with good pace. Carrington doesn’t put a lot of pressure at the rim, but he still finds ways to score consistently with his ability to make tough shots and create for others.

The number one pick in the 2024 NBA Draft has been a top-three rookie early in the season, which is a positive sign for him and the Atlanta Hawks. He stands 6-foot-10 and has demonstrated his all-around shooting ability. Risacher is able to make one-timers, dribble and move.

There was a valid argument to be made that he was a top-five shooter in his draft class. Trae Young’s floor-spacing ability next to him is a perfect fit and he proved it in one of his games where he made six 3-pointers. He is also a versatile defender and shows legitimate 3-and-D potential. If the rookie continues to be productive, he has a chance to win the Rookie of the Year award.
