Dolly Parton says Miley Cyrus’ ‘Used to Be Young’ should have been her song

Dolly Parton can love his goddaughter Miley Cyrus – but she didn’t really like one song she chose to record.

During an interview in November with Harper’s BazaarCyrus, 32, admitted Parton, 78, was skeptical about her 2023 song »I was young.”

Cyrus explained, “She’s like, ‘I don’t know if I like this new song ‘Used to Be Young’ because it’s not fair that you’re singing about not being young when you’re young and beautiful. And here I am – I’m about 80 years old – and I’m like, ‘That should have been my song!’ »

It appears that Cyrus may have considered giving the legendary singer the “personal” song, as she admitted that she somewhat regrets recording it.

“I actually listened to this song yesterday and was like, ‘Do I really need to release this?’ It was one of those things that maybe now that I’m a little more private, I would have kept private, but I’m glad I shared it,” she said. Harper’s Bazaar. “It feels like such a personal song that it’s hard for people to relate to it.”

The song’s lyrics say, in part: “I know I was crazy / I know I was fun / You say I was wild / I say I was young / You tell me time m has changed / It’s good, I had a good journey / I know I was crazy / It’s because I was young.

Cyrus has lived a lot of life in her 32 years, considering she’s been in the Hollywood spotlight since she was a child. She was 13 when Hannah Montana premiered in 2006, became a pop star in 2009, and went through a public relationship that turned into divorce from a longtime love Liam Hemsworth in 2019.

In a May 2023 interview with British VogueCyrus opened up about the criticism she faced during her teenage years as she transitioned from a child star to a young adult. She discussed some of the provocative moments of her career in her early 20s, like twerking on stage at the 2013 MTV Music Video Awards and licking a hammer during the “Wrecking Ball” music video.

“I’m actually not an attention-seeker, sitting here as a 30-year-old grown woman,” she told the outlet. “I was creating attention for myself because I was separating myself from a character I had played. Anybody, when you’re 20 or 21, you have more to prove: ‘I’m not my parents.’ I am who I am.’

She added that after being “judged harshly by adults as a child,” she can safely say that “now, as an adult, I realize I would never judge a child harshly.”

As Cyrus got older, he realized that it was okay to make mistakes and try new things.

“I actually live for it,” she said Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s yin and yang. It’s like you really can’t have one without the other. It is heaven and hell; it is dark and light. That’s all.

This attitude rings true in his upcoming studio album Something beautifulwhich she sees as “an attempt to heal a somewhat sick culture through music”.

“I would like to be a human psychedelic for people,” he says. Grammy winner continued. “I don’t want anyone to try to be like me, imitate me or even be inspired by me. I want to impact the frequencies in your body that vibrate you on a different level.

She also admitted that she wanted to try to approach her career the same way as Parton — by not sharing too much about her inner world.

“She lets everyone and no one in at the same time,” Cyrus said of Parton. “Everyone feels like they know her, but they’re also OK with the fact that they don’t see her without the makeup, without all the drag.”
