Tips for Adjusting When Daylight Saving Time Ends

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — As daylight saving time comes to an end, Nevada residents are experiencing brighter mornings and earlier sunsets.

Even though it’s only an hour’s difference, Las Vegas-based psychologist and therapist Julie Robinson says the change can have noticeable effects on daily routines and mood.

“It affects our natural rhythm; our circadian rhythms are affected, even by that one-hour change,” Robinson said. “It can lead us to feel frustrated, irritable, anxious and feel bad without really knowing why.”

Robinson explains that this transition period can be stressful for both children and adults. Early darkness in the evening can increase feelings of fatigue, while the change in daylight hours can leave many people feeling sluggish.

For those looking to adapt, Robinson recommends simulating sunlight indoors.

“You can use a lamp that you can buy on Amazon, which will simulate sunlight. Psychologically, you will feel like you are experiencing the sun,” she said. “Another way to help is to get more sleep and take care of whatever your body needs to stay in tune with your natural rhythm.”

In addition to using light therapy, Robinson suggests taking time for self-care and being patient. Seasonal transitions, especially around the holidays, can add stress to an already difficult adjustment.

“There’s a lot going on,” she added. “With this added change, you or your child may feel irritable, frustrated, or cranky without knowing why. Be kind to yourself.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Gradual adjustments: Try going to bed 10 to 15 minutes earlier each night to adjust more gradually to the new time.
  • Exit: Exposure to natural sunlight, even during the colder months, can help regulate your internal clock.
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol: Reducing these stimulants, especially in the evening, can improve sleep quality and make change easier.
  • Keep a routine: Establishing a consistent bedtime and wake-up time can help you feel more balanced during the transition.

Experts say patience and awareness are key. With some adjustment and self-compassion, many find the impact of the time change to be short-lived.
