Cyclone bombs B.C. to create world’s largest wave pool

Just a few hundred kilometers off the coast of Vancouver Island, models predict significant wave heights of more than 10 meters (35 feet).

Wind forecast in British Columbia Tuesday evening

These wave heights imply that the theoretical maximum wave height, the highest wave the storm could generate, could reach 20 meters (70 feet).

For perspective, that’s the equivalent of a six-story building, four adult giraffes stacked together, one-fifth the height of the Statue of Liberty, 10 African elephants, and three T. Rex dinosaurs.

Punching waves along the coast

Closer to the shore, the waves will still be just as powerful.

West Coast of Vancouver Island: Expect waves between six and eight meters (20 to 26 feet), with a potential maximum of 12 meters (40 feet).

Strait of Georgia: Wave heights will reach three to four meters (10 to 13 feet), with northern sections potentially experiencing a peak wave of up to five meters (16 feet). These waves could have significant coastal impacts, particularly with the tidal cycle amplifying their effects.
