ChatGPT Search is here to fight both Google and Perplexity

ChatGPT receives his second new search functionality of the week, the company announced THURSDAY. Dubbed ChatGPT Search, this tool will provide real-time data from across the internet in response to your chat prompts.

ChatGPT Search appears to be both OpenAI’s answer to the perplexity and a boost to Google’s bow.

“You can get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, for which you previously would have had to go to a search engine,” the company exclaims in its announcement message. “This combines the benefits of a natural language interface with the value of up-to-date sports scores, news, stock quotes, and much more.”

The chatbot would access this enhanced web search as needed, depending on the nature of the prompt, but it could also be manually activated by the user. OpenAI has partnered with news and data providers, including The Associated Press, Axel Springer, Condé Nast, Financial Times, Hearst, News Corp, Reuters, The Atlantic, Time and Vox Media, to provide information on questions on a number of topics, such as weather, stocks, sports, news and maps. You can also expect to see new visuals for these topic categories.

Learn a lesson from all the troubles that Perplexity’s Data Recovery Habits have caused, ChatGPT Search is explicit about where it pulls its data from. AI responses will include links to the source of the information, while a Source button below the response will open a sidebar with all these references.

ChatGPT search is significantly different from the chat history search function. that the company debuted on Tuesday. Chat history search will find and bring up references and statements made in your previous conversations with ChatGPT, without the need for internet queries.

Coincidentally, Google released an extremely similar search feature For Gemini also Thursday, titled Grounding with Google Search.

You can try the new ChatGPT search for yourself starting today. It is available across the entire OpenAI ecosystem, including the web portal, as well as desktop and mobile applications. ChatGPT Plus and Team users, as well as people who have signed up to the research waitlist, have access to the feature today. It will arrive to Enterprise and Edu users “in the coming weeks” and to free users over the coming months.
