How much does my vote count? Search your state to find out

Any idea for which state residents have the most powerful voices 2024 presidential election? Pennsylvania? Georgia? Arizona?

All would be good answers, but one new analysis of WalletHub suggests Nevadans’ votes will likely carry the most weight in this election. Not surprisingly, voters in these three other battleground states will also have outsized influence. WalletHub, a personal finance site, used three criteria to arrive at these results:

Are the races close: Recent YouGov Models suggest the presidential vote could be closest in North Carolina and Georgia, while West Virginia, Wyoming and Washington, D.C., will likely be the least competitive.

How many electoral votes for each state: California has 54 and Texas 40, while six states and the District of Columbia have three.

State population: We tweaked WalletHub’s formula and instead used registered voters from November 2022. The result: nearly identical rankings, but ours amplified the “voting power scores” for battleground states.

Pennsylvania, with its 19 electoral votes and close polls, has attracted frequent visits from that of former President Donald Trump And Vice President Kamala Harris‘campaigns. So how do Nevadans and their six electoral votes stack up ahead of Pennsylvania?

Even though the voting power of Pennsylvanians is significantly less than that of Nevadans, Pennsylvania voters will still have significant influence compared to the rest of the country. The results of the seven battleground states, as defined by Real Clear Politics, dwarf the election results of most of the country. Only six other states have scores in the triple digits.

How Voter Power Rankings Compare for Each State

In the end, WalletHub multiplies each state’s result by 1 million. This calculation creates numbers that are easier to digest. But symbolically, it also suggests that although our votes carry different weights in national elections, our votes generally carry the greatest weight in state and local elections.

WalletHub’s calculations on voter power in Senate races are changing significantly. They trade each state’s two senators for the number of Electoral College votes the state has.

Smaller electorates have a bigger impact on Senate races

In Senate races, states with smaller numbers of registered voters create an outsized advantage. Just over 600,000 Montanans were registered to vote in 2022.
