No charges for US park police officer who fatally shot 17-year-old in 2023

A US Park Police officer who shot and killed a 17-year-old in 2023 will not face charges, according to the Department of Justice.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in DC announced Thursday that there was not enough evidence to pursue federal criminal civil rights or DC police charges against the USPP officer for his role in the shooting murderer of Dalaneo Martin in March 2023.

The DOJ says the DC USAO, the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division conducted a thorough review of the incident and determined that charges were not warranted.

The teenager was killed on the morning of March 18 last year when US Park Police officials responded to a call from Washington DC police for help with a suspicious vehicle on the 34 streets and Baker, near River Terrace Park, a federal park in Washington state. Northeast Washington DC

MPD and USPP officers at the scene saw a driver, later identified as Dalaneo Martin, asleep in a car. They determined the car had a license plate belonging to another car and said its ignition had been punched out — a sign the car may have been stolen.

One of the USPP officers got into the car from the rear passenger side to attempt to get Martin out of the car.

When the officer got into the car, Martin woke up and a struggle ensued. He then stepped on the gas, driving down the street with the officer in the back seat of the car.

The officer then told Martin to stop or he would shoot, but Martin continued. As Martin continued driving, turning left onto Kenilworth Avenue, the officer again said, “Stop man, let me out!” Let me out! Stop or I’ll shoot. Seconds later, five shots were quickly fired.

After Martin was struck, the car continued up 36th Street, left the road, crossed a curb and went up an embankment before crashing into a house on the south side of 36th Street, north- East.

Bodycam video of the entire incident was released in April 2023. It showed officers trying to resuscitate Martin, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A gun was later found in the SUV, but it was unclear if the gun belonged to Martin. Police also did not say whether the vehicle was actually stolen or who it belonged to.

“After a careful, thorough and independent review of the evidence, federal prosecutors found insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the United States State Park Police officer is criminally responsible for the death of Mr. Martin,” DC USAO said Thursday. press release.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office remains committed to investigating allegations of excessive force by law enforcement officers and will continue to devote the necessary resources to ensure that all allegations of serious civil rights violations are brought to justice. subject to a full and thorough investigation,” the press release continued.

Speaking of his funeral In April 2023, Martin’s family said the police officer who shot the 17-year-old should be arrested.

“This pain hurts me so much. I just want justice for my son,” said Terra Martin, Dalaneo’s mother. told FOX 5 in 2023. “I need the officers to be (locked up) everyone who played a role. He got in that car because he had another motive for my son.”
