Newfound Gap and Great Smoky Mountains roads will be closed until December

Drivers traveling through the Great Smoky Mountains can expect delays starting Nov. 18 as crews perform routine maintenance ahead of the winter season.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will conduct annual “hazardous tree mitigation” along several park roads, including Newfound Gap and The Spur, in November and December. Crews will remove hazardous limbs and limbs and closures are necessary for the safety of the crew and driver.

Here’s what will be closed and when

  • The spur: Single lane closures will be in place November 18-22 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Cherokee Orchard Road: The one-way section after Twin Creeks will be closed to all traffic December 2-3. Access to the Rainbow Falls trailhead will be restricted.
  • Newfound Gap Road/US 441 Gatlinburg to Cherokee: Single lane closures in work zone will be in place December 4-20.

Drivers should expect traffic delays and allow extra time to travel, the National Park Service warns. Updated road closures And other updates are available on the park website.
