“It was a very toxic relationship,” Cramer, who is representing himself, told Ontario Court Justice Jenny Restoule-Mallozzi via a Zoom link from Elliot Lake. “I want to return to what I was before her: a productive member of society.”

Cramer, 36, had pleaded guilty to four charges following two incidents in Sudbury in December and July of this year: assault, uttering threats to cause bodily harm and two counts of breaching probation .

Restoule-Mallozzi, accepting a sentencing proposal from the Crown, imposed a suspended sentence.

She also issued a one-year probation order that includes conditions under which Cramer undergoes treatment for issues including anger management, substance abuse and domestic violence.

In addition, he cannot have weapons and must stay away from his now ex-partner, except to have access to their children and the teenager he had threatened.

Ultimately, the judge issued an order for genetic analysis.

Cramer told Restoule-Mallozzi that because he was still under a probation order he received in 2023, he had already completed anger management and substance abuse counseling programs.

Cramer also said he works six or seven days a week in the roofing field, has care of three children and lives with his parents who help him considerably.

Judge Restoule-Mallozzi warned Cramer that if he did not resolve his personal issues, he would return to court in the future.

“You are by no means a hardened career criminal, but it concerns me when I see you in my court with a conviction involving a former partner and an 18-year-old,” she told him.

“If you don’t want to get help, you will return to this court in the future…I want to be very clear: You must take full advantage of these programs. »

Cramer had a criminal record, but it consisted of two break and enter convictions, one in 2011 and one in June 2023. He received a one-year suspended prison sentence and a probation order resulting of the latter.

The court heard Cramer and a woman had a five-year relationship which ended in July. They had a child together.

Police in Greater Sudbury and Elliot Lake knew the couple, as officers in both communities had previously encountered incidents of alleged domestic violence.

The woman contacted Greater Sudbury Police and said Cramer assaulted her while they lived in Hanmer.

The woman alleged that while they were both using crack cocaine one day between December 11 and 22, 2023, they got into an argument and she attempted to leave. She said Cramer grabbed her jacket and pulled it, causing her to hit her head on a shelf. The injury did not require medical attention.

At the time, Cramer was subject to a probation order issued in June 2023.

“There was no crack on my part,” Cramer told the court. “(But) there was an argument.”

Then, around 10:30 a.m. on July 9, Cramer and the woman were on a video chat when Cramer told an 18-year-old who was listening to him about getting a job that he would hit him and “it’s about time that he learns a lesson. »

Cramer remained subject to a probation order issued in June 2023.

Cramer admitted to threatening the teen.

Assistant Crown attorney Sasha Bronicheski stressed that Cramer, through his pleas, accepted responsibility for his actions and that meant witnesses would not have to testify at a trial.

“(The suspended sentence and probation) are appropriate in the circumstances,” she said.
