Newcastle prepare shock move for 671-game Real Madrid icon after dream transfer comes to naught

Newcastle have reportedly set their sights on Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos as a way to improve their defense, with the Spaniard still seen as a top-tier asset.

The Magpies have struggled this season to create a disparity between goals scored and goals conceded. Their goal difference of just two suggests that strengthening both areas would be ideal.

Links with attackers have surfaced, but with centre-back Sven Botman still on the sidelines, adding another defender to the squad could come in handy.

According to SheetsNewcastle are weighing up options to strengthen the backline and have landed on Real Madrid legend Ramos.

They are believed to have set their sights on him because they are confident his leadership and experience could help them achieve their campaign goals.

The report suggests they are “ready to submit a fee of €10m (£8.3m/$10.4m) to sign the Spanish defender for a season and a half.”

Termination of Ramos contract

That would essentially equate to £105,000 a week in wages, which is in the top 10 of Newcastle’s highest earners, but not at the very top of that bracket.

With both Saudi and MLS teams interested in Ramos as of late, it is likely that he would be able to earn a lot more in either league and could turn down the Magpies because of that.

But given he is still seen, at 38, as a top asset, he could decide to continue playing for a big club, with Newcastle struggling at the top of the Premier League in recent seasons, rather than going down of a level.

The fact that he was a free agent for the first few months of this season suggests he could wait until the next MLS season begins, which kicks off in February 2025. He could, however, simply be waiting for the right opportunity in Europe, having always played on the continent.

Regardless, Real Madrid, although linked with his recent signing due to injuries to center backs Eder Militao and David Alaba, have apparently decided not to bring Ramos back after 671 games for them, as they don’t think that it is at the right level. NOW.
