Raiders’ Minshew weighs in on new offensive leadership

The Las Vegas Raiders return Gardner Minshew for their Week 11 game against the Miami Dolphins.

Minshew was the starter for most of the season, except for a few hiccups in his performance. The Raiders just underwent seismic changes within their offensive staff, and Minshew shared his thoughts with reporters. We have the full video here:

Here is the full transcript of head coach Antonio Pierce’s press briefing on Wednesday:

Q: Have you chosen a quarterback?

Coach Pierce: “Yeah. Gardner Minshew.”

Q: What motivated this decision?

Coach Pierce: “Listen, when we brought in Gardner (Minshew), we obviously expected the play that we had seen in the past. And at some point you have to give a guy confidence. And there were some moments, obviously, with turnovers and other things that took place where we made the decision to bench him or move on to another quarterback But this week, I felt like that. Gardner gives us the best opportunity to move forward, and he has every chance to go out there and help us get to a victory.”

Q: How do you give Gardner Minshew confidence at this point?

Coach Pierce: “Everyone around him. It starts with the staff, starts with myself, starts with believing and letting them know, ‘Man, go out there and let it go, let it go.’ And what do we have to lose at this point, right? 2-7 So everything that’s behind us is behind us, and I look forward to everything that’s in front of me.”

Q: You made some changes to the offensive staff. Scott Turner is the offensive coordinator, you bring in Norv Turner and Joe Philbin is the offensive line coach. What changes can we expect? Are they going to be dramatic or subtle?

Coach Pierce: “I think we’re all waiting to see that. We’ll see it here in practice today. Obviously, I’m not going to make any promises, but I just wanted a change, I wanted a spark, I wanted to do something different calling on Norv (Turner) as someone coming from the outside, he obviously watched our games with a lot of respect. He coached against me as a player, watching it from afar obviously being with Scott. (Turner) in recent years So find some. additional ideas, outside ideas, different perspectives, game planning, how to attack the weakest link, how to put our players in the best position to succeed I can’t wait.”

Q: You made this decision (change with the technical staff) quickly after the match. How much did it help your game planning to do this so quickly? Coach Pierce: “Huge. I wanted to get it over with. Once I made the decision to move on, put these two gentlemen in place, put everything in place that we needed from an HR standpoint in terms of paperwork, and to get in the building and start working during our bye week to give us 10 days to prepare for the Dolphins.

Q: What do you think of the week off for the technical staff and even for the absent players?

Coach Pierce: “Good, good. I needed it, man. I needed to take a nice cold shower, a cold bath, wash off everything that happened in the nine games. And I think that our staff did the same. I know our players I did, but they were still in the building, which is the best thing about it, right. People might question our locker room? , might question our culture, might question me, but you can’t question our committed commitment to this bad boy and turn it around when they got here on Tuesday, that’s what I felt, that’s what they felt from me, and I hope you feel it now.”

Q: What do you think about Michael Mayer returning to practice and his possibility of playing in the future?

Coach Pierce: “Excited, man. It was good to see Big Mike (Michael Mayer), man. He looked good, he was a little tan, so I don’t know where he was, but he was hanging out in a good place But he looked good, man. He’s in good shape, he’s been here all this bye week, training, getting in shape and around the team, around the building. , obviously, when we met yesterday, everyone was there excited, you heard a lot of knocking But in the end it’s business as usual, that’s what Mike does.

Q: Do you think this is a sort of acceleration period? I know he has this training window before he officially has to come back, do you think he might need to take some time to prepare?

Coach Pierce: “It’s a good thing we had a bye week. It’s a good ramp-up period there, too.”

Q: You mentioned Scott Turner, but you also promoted Joe Philbin to interim offensive line coach. What do you expect from him?

Coach Pierce: “Fundamentals and technique, man. That’s what I was looking for with our O-line, right? Pad level, eyes down, hitting, physicality up front, getting off the rock, hand placement, hats off to where he’s supposed to be Joe Philbin has been in this game for a long time, coached some very good offensive lines and been around some good offenses as well And obviously you have a gentleman who has been a head coach,. we’ve already talked about it. an offensive coordinator, and his strong suit is O-line play. And the only thing we talked about was just how we look outside of the offensive line, what does it look like physically to from a technical point of view, from a fundamental point of view? I can’t wait to see what these guys do today in training.”

Q: Have you decided who will take over the quarterback room from a coach’s perspective?

Coach Pierce: “Scott (Turner) will be there.”

Q: As far as your offense goes, at this point in the season, is it possible to make big changes or is it more of tinkering and small changes?

Coach Pierce: “No, I think we should change the look, the sound, the outcome, the operation, the results. Being effective in the running game, right? Taking care of the football, having opportunities in the red zone, All those things that were flaws for us in the first nine, that’s where we want to see improvement. The key word for us, especially this week, is improvement. And all of this won’t happen in a week, so I won’t. I’m not going to fix all of those things. I doubt we can do that in a week, but there are some things that we’ve talked about as a staff and as a team that we need to fix this week, in particular.”

Q: Jackson Powers-Johnson played well at center. Going forward, do you feel like you’re going to stick with him at the center?

Coach Pierce: “He’ll be at center this week.”

Q: How is working with Scott Turner to change the look of the offense? Are you just letting him do his job or do you have a few key points to make to him that you want to see implemented or changed? How is it going?

Coach Pierce: “I think with all of our coordinators, I tell them exactly what I want it to look like, and they obviously come up with the game plan. But there are some things that need to change. Our ability to run the football must We must run the football. We are one of the worst teams in football, if not the worst team in football. So that has to change and I can speak to the effectiveness of third down in the red zone. we have opportunities, either through our special teams or by our defense, to put the ”

Q: I know the teams are different from last year, but obviously you played against the Dolphins. Is there anything you can take from last year’s game to help you this year?

Coach Pierce: “Yeah, I think I feel their speed because it’s real. These guys are fast, man, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4. I don’t think anyone is 4.5, I think it’s illegal for their scouting department But it’s real I think we have to feel that with 10 (Tyreek Hill), with 17 (Jaylen Waddle), 28 (De’Von Achane). I didn’t play much in this game, and I think 31 (Raheem Mostert). So just getting these guys going, understanding the pace and speed and efficiency that Tua (Tagovailoa) plays, I think that. It was really good, and it’s a good movie that we can look back on and now as we watch the other four games this year as well.”

Q: Your O-line was hit last game, where is it this week?

Coach Pierce: “The bye week helped. The bye week helped; I’ll just say that. The bye week helped. We’re getting there. And the good part is guys don’t want to be in the training room, we have this type of team where the guys don’t want to be in the training room, they want to be on the turf.

Q: Will Kolton Miller be in training as well as Andre James?

Coach Pierce: “Yeah, Kolton (Miller) will be limited and Andre (James) will be out today.”
