NBA reopens investigation into Jaxson Hayes after new video released

NBA reopens investigation surrounding a July 2021 incident involving Jaxson Hayes.

In new video footage obtained by TMZThe Los Angeles Lakers center, 24, can be seen involved in a physical altercation with his then-girlfriend Sofia Jamora, stemming from an argument over their respective pet dogs.

The incident occurred hours before he was arrested for an altercation with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) that evening.

After the video was shared, the NBA reacted in a statement, according to ESPNstating: “Following the media report and video released this morning, we are reopening our investigation.”

A Hayes spokesperson told the outlet, “There has already been a thorough investigation that we have cooperated with the league on, and as that investigation reopens, we will continue to do so.”

The NBA did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. A representative for Hayes could not be contacted.

In the security video footage, Hayes and Jamora can be heard arguing. At one point, Jamora says, “Stop. Let me go,” before the basketball player responds, “What’s wrong with you?”

As the former couple leaves the residence, Jamora then appears to say in the video, “I’m not going to let you hit me anymore. How do I look like a fucking punching bag?” She also threatens to call the police on Hayes.

The video then shows Hayes, who played for the New Orleans Pelicans at the time, walking away from his former girlfriend, before turning around to spit on her.

After the dispute years ago, the LAPD responded to domestic dispute report.

At the time, officers asked Hayes to stay outside while they spoke to Jamora about the alleged incident, but the athlete was uncooperative and attempted to re-enter the residence several times.

“The officers used physical force to bring Hayes to the ground to overcome his resistance. Once on the ground, Hayes attempted to get up and continued to resist the officers. The officers used two Taser deployments, as well as the body weight and physical force during the attack,” the LAPD said in an earlier statement.

According to NBC SportsJamora claimed that Hayes had previously abused her. She filed a complaint against the basketball player, which is still active.

The outlet reported that Hayes was charged with 12 misdemeanors and sentenced to three years of probation, including community service and attendance at domestic violence classes.

At the time of the incident, Hayes was not disciplined by the NBA.

According to NBC Sports, Hayes and the Lakers are currently cooperating in the investigation.
