Lethbridge Legion Launches Poppy Campaign to Raise Funds for Veterans in Need

The General Stewart Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is preparing to launch its annual Poppy Campaign this weekend.

The Legion says the number of people wearing poppies has declined in recent years.

The campaign is scheduled to begin Saturday and will continue until Memorial Day.

Local youth groups will distribute poppies and boxes will be placed in shops across the town.

“It’s a visible sign that people are thinking about those who paid the ultimate price for the freedom we enjoy today,” said Glenn Miller of the General Stewart Branch No. 4 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Glenn Miller of the Lethbridge Legion General Stewart Branch #4 says the goal for this year’s Poppy Campaign is $90,000.

“The poppy is a trademark of the Royal Canadian Legion and they guard it well,” added Miller, “so anything involving a poppy is pre-approved by the National National Headquarters of the Royal Canadian Legion for other activities.”

Collecting poppies is free, but donations are encouraged.

Money raised during the campaign will be used to help local veterans in need.
