Austin mayoral candidate Carmen Llanes Pulido calls for recount of votes in November election

Austin mayoral candidate Carmen Llanes Pulido has requested a recount for the November general election.

“It’s important that we do what we can to make sure that every vote counts and that it’s a fair process,” she said after filing the petition Thursday. “I owe it to my supporters, and I feel I owe it to the half of Austin who voted for responsible new leadership.”

Llanes Pulido received the second most votes in the mayoral race behind incumbent Kirk Watson.

Candidates for mayor must obtain a majority of votes, or 50% plus one vote, to win; otherwise, the race will go to a runoff between the top two vote winners.

Watson declared victory last weekwith only 13 votes to avoid a second round.

Llanes Pulido said because the margin was razor thin, she felt the community deserved reassurance that every vote was being counted correctly. She cited vote counting irregularities in Travis, Williamson and Hays counties.

His request specifically targets the city’s 11 precincts in Williamson County.

Watson was not immediately available for comment.

The city has 48 hours to respond to the petition.
