Who is most likely to participate? Women or men? What does this mean for Harris versus Trump?

It was not always this way. Before 1980, men voted in higher proportions than women in presidential elections.

But since then, women have become the most reliable voters.

And if this trend continues – as some signs suggest – Kamala Harris will benefit from this election.

This is due to another trend: The gap between how men and women view issues and candidates has widened and grown in strength.

In mid-October USA TODAY/Suffolk University national poll, women supported Harris decisively, 53% to 36%. This reflects men’s overwhelming support for Donald Trump, 53% to 37%. If these margins hold until Election Day, it would be the largest disparity since a gender gap emerged more than four decades ago, in 1980.

In the election year that first saw Ronald Reagan in the White House, a slightly higher proportion of women (59.4%) than men (59.1%) voted. It was the first time in at least 60 years that women led men in a presidential election year, according to census data dating back to 1964.

Women have continued to vote more reliably than men and early signs indicate this year will be no different.

As of November 1, women represented 53% of early voters nationally, ahead of men at 44%. according to TargetSmarta Democratic-aligned company that tracks early voting data, USA TODAY reported.

The Harris campaign has focused on winning over a large number of female voters, boosted by the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision striking down the constitutional right to abortion.

Women were the driving force behind a late shift to Harris in Iowa, according to a Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll which shook the political world when it showed Harris leading Trump in this red state.

To overcome Harris’ dominance among female voters, Trump targeted an often overlooked voting bloc: young men who lack university degrees.

Mega-podcaster Joe Rogan supported Trump on the eve of the election, emphasizing Trump’s call for “voting among brothers.”

But Trump must motivate this population to turn out in greater numbers than in recent elections.

Comparison of participation rates in presidential electionse

During the last presidential election, approximately 10 million additional women voted only men in 2020, according to the Center for American Women in Politics.

More than 79 million Americans voted early Monday afternoon, according to the University of Florida Election Projectwhich tracks early voting numbers. More than 100 million Americans voted in early 2020, USA TODAY reported.

Where women voted in 2022

Women “showed up to vote overwhelming numbers” in the 2022 non-presidential election, according to the League of Women Voters. That’s the same year the Supreme Court voted for overturn Roe v. Wadethe federal right to abortion care, the LWV said.

More women than men register to vote

Polls show that Harris performs much better with women, while Trump is more popular with men. A USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll taken October 14 to 18 found that Harris led nationally 53 to 36 percent with female voters and that Trump led 53 to 37 percent among male voters.
