A Texas influencer was disqualified from the New York City Marathon and banned from future New York City running events after running part of the course with people on e-bikes filming him.

Matthew Choi, of Austin, was disqualified Sunday from the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon and removed from the results, the New York Road Runners said in a statement.

He was further banned from any future NYRR races.

The decision came after “a review and due to violations of World Athletic Rules, the New York Road Runners Code of Conduct and Competition Rules.”

The organization said Choi ran with the help of two unauthorized people who rode the course on electric bikes, causing inconvenience to the runners.

Choi apologized in a video shared Tuesday afternoon on social networks. On Instagram, he has 404,000 subscribers and more than 465,000 on Tik Tok.

“I screwed up. This was not a video I intended to make. But I have no excuses, period. I was selfish on Sunday to have my brother and my videographer follow me around the course on an electric bike and that had serious consequences,” he said.

“We put other runners in danger, we impacted people who were chasing personal bests, we stopped people from getting water. And since the New York Marathon is about everyone and the community, I did it for myself. And to everyone I’ve touched, I’m sorry,” he continued.

He said the incident was “100 percent my fault.”

“It wasn’t my brother trying to get vaccinated. It wasn’t my partners who were asking me for content. I was really excited about hitting Sub 3 New York and I was overzealous to hit all the shots,” he explained.

He said he received an email from the New York Road Runners Monday evening regarding his disqualification and lifetime ban.

“Even if there is a possibility of appealing, I will not do it. I made my bed so I’m going to lie down in it. This isn’t the first time we’ve been called out for using electric bikes to film content, but it stops there. This won’t happen again. My word is my bond,” Choi promised.

On Monday, he shared an Instagram Reel showing him running along the New York City Marathon route. He said he finished the race with a time of 2:57:15 at a pace of 6.44/mile.
