Game show legend Chuck Woolery had a romantic relationship with Nashville

Game show legend Chuck Woolery, who died this weekend at age 83, had a longtime romantic relationship with Nashville.

Before finding fame as the original host of “Wheel of Fortune” and “Love Connection” and then becoming a conservative podcaster, Kentucky-born Woolery was a country music singer and songwriter.

He sang and played double bass with a folk trio called The Bordermen in the early 1960s. He later spent seven years in Music City with the psychedelic pop duo The Avant-Garde and signed a major label contract.

The duo reached one-hit wonder status with the 1968 song “Naturally Stoned,” hitting the top 40 on the radio charts.

Tennessee journalist Brad Schmitt met the veteran game show host on the set of Fox’s “Greed” in 2000, and Woolery said he turned down an offer to host TNN’s “Prime Time Country” , a decision he said was “a big mistake.” “

More recently, he returned to Nashville from time to time, visiting his son at the White House and cheering on his granddaughter, Grayson Woolery, as she played for the Lady Devils softball team at White House High School. .

A few years after “Naturally Stoned” topped the charts, Woolery sang Kris Kristofferson’s 1970 country ballad “Help Me Make It Through the Night” alongside country music giant Dolly Parton on an episode from her first variety show, “Dolly”.

According to Dollymania.net, Woolery guest starred in “Dolly” during the 1976-77 television season.
