Leader from Garrett Crochet, optimism from Roki Sasaki, buzz from Willy Adames

Perhaps against the better judgment of many fans, it appears that the Boston Red Sox are gearing up for a massive offseason, both in free agency and on the trade market. Although many fans will (perhaps intelligently) employ a strategy of believing it when you see it, there remains a constant flow of messages. MLB Rumors and the buzz that the Red Sox are ready to spend big, ready to make a blockbuster trade and ready to make a jump after an 81-81 finish to the 2024 season.

And these latest Red Sox rumors should only further fuel such optimism for what this offseason could look like in Boston.

The Red Sox’s need for impact right-handed bats has been a sore point for the lineup throughout the 2024 season. Whenever it has been a lefty on the mound, it has t truly felt like Boston was living off Tyler O’Neill, Rob Refsnyder and a prayer for some semblance of offensive production. So it stands to reason that Craig Breslow and the front office have argued that adding right-handed bats is a priority this offseason.

Former Brewers shortstop Willy Adames is a right-hander who is gaining momentum because of his connection to Boston. MLB Network insider Jon Morosi reported this week that Adames was willing to move his positions to get the right fit before listing the Red Sox as a potential free agent landing spot this offseason.

There are two important factors in this, but ones that would make sense for the Red Sox. First, even with Adames open to a position change, Trevor Story could also move and give way to Adames, which could be interesting as a flexible free agent option. Beyond that, the biggest factor might be the possibility that one of Boston’s top prospects, Marcelo Mayer, is moved and opens up the future for Shortstop.

But Adames would be a huge, albeit expensive, boom considering the Red Sox’s needs. After posting a .794 OPS and 118 OPS+ last year, he fits the bill for the right-handed boost Boston’s offense needs this offseason.

To the delight of aggressive MLB organizations around the league, the young Japanese pitching star Roki Sasaki should be on display this offseason at just 23 years old. That in itself could be interesting for Boston, as the organization has historically not shied away from pursuing Japanese stars. However, there are two other things that could work in favor of one of the biggest names available this offseason.

ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel ($) reported that Sasaki was released that, although the Los Angeles Dodgers are considered the favorites for the pitcher this offseason, the 23-year-old could actually be interested in a smaller market than New York or Los Angeles, especially if the Dodgers pass.

“There has also been some discussion in the scouting community that Sasaki’s personality and background means he might be a better fit or more interested in a smaller market.”

That’s one thing that could work in Boston’s favor, of course, but the Red Sox are also in a strong position to use money from their international bonus pool — which Sasaki is eligible for because, due to his age , he is considered an amateur – in which they have $6,261,600 to spendwhich puts them in the third tier of baseball but in a good position compared to other aggressive offseason contenders.

All things considered, Sasaki may still be a long shot. But there are some underlying factors currently working in the Red Sox’s favor.

The white whale looming over the offseason for several suitors is the Chicago White Sox flamethrower Garrett Hook. While the southpaw has his fair share of concerns, including whether he’ll be able to last a full season as a starter, something he has yet to fully prove he can do, his stuff is absolutely top notch. elite and attractive to any team in need of pitching, which the Red Sox clearly are.

Not only that, but Boston could actually be in the driver’s seat – or at least in the front seat – in the race to pull off a blockbuster trade for the lefty.

Red Sox insider Sean McAdam of MassLive recently looked into the possibility of the club trading for Hook and, according to his sources, Boston has the strength of the farm system combined with the need. to make a deal which the White Sox would be happy with.

“I think they’re in the thick of it,” said a baseball player familiar with White Sox thinking. “It will depend on (what they’re willing to offer), but from a talent standpoint, they’re a good fit. They didn’t show as much interest (as others) at the trade deadline. trades (last summer), but the interest increased in the offseason and they’re sending the message: ‘We want to be involved in this, we want to be involved in these discussions.’

“I definitely think they’re one of five teams that are legitimate, real teams that match up in terms of prospects.”

Meanwhile, MassLive’s Christopher Smith also reported that the Red Sox are likely top prospect Roman Anthony nor Top 10 prospect Kristian Campbell. untouchable in commercial negotiationsinsinuating that Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel, the other two Big 4 parts in the organization, could be moved.

With reports that the White Sox are looking for position players, Mayer, Teel and even Wilyer Abreu all seem to fit what Chicago is looking for in exchange for an ace. And with their current farm system and level of desperation, all indications are that the Red Sox are a true leader in completing this trade this offseason.
