Stock market today: The Dow Jones ends with a slight gain after the CPI inflation reading

US stocks ended mostly higher on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 barely registering a gain, after the October consumer price index came in colder than some market participants had expected .

The Dow closed up 47.21 points, or 0.1%, at 43,958.19, based on preliminary data.

The S&P 500 finished up about 1 point at 5,985.38.

Wednesday’s closing levels for the Dow and S&P 500 were the third highest on record, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

The Nasdaq Composite finished down 50.66 points, or 0.3%, at 19,230.74.

The small-cap Russell 2000 closed down 22.47 points, or 0.9%, at 2,369.37.

“The market was relieved because there were growing expectations of an unexpected rise in inflation,” said Eric Sterner, chief investment officer at Apollon Wealth Management, which manages more than $9 billion in assets in Mount Pleasant , in South Carolina.
