The rules and regulations voters must follow

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County Registrar of Voters’ Office has received a few questions about the legalities and rules of campaigning.

Electoral campaigning can be defined as a campaign for or against a candidate, an electoral issue or a political party by:

  • Sign display
  • Distribute literature
  • Using loudspeakers to broadcast information about a candidate, voting issue, or political party
  • Buy, sell, wear or display any badge, button or other insignia that expressly refers to a political party or candidate or ballot question to be voted on in this election
  • Solicit signatures for any type of petition.

“We have received reports that people were perhaps complaining because there was someone outside the line with a horn and so as it is outside the election campaign line we “We can’t do much, and we might try talking to these people just to try to adjust to everything,” says media specialist Georgie Guthrie.

TThe reason they cannot intervene at this stage is because the act of electioneering is not necessarily illegal.

“But within that 100-foot range, that’s when you have to be careful when you’re advocating for a candidate or having a campaign item anywhere.”

Campaigning within 100 feet of a voting location could result in a serious misdemeanor.

This means you could end up with up to 364 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.
