Democrat launches new tool to force release of Matt Gaetz report

Rep. Sean Casten, an Illinois Democrat, reportedly plans to introduce a privileged resolution that would force a vote of the full House to require the House Ethics Committee to make public the investigation into the alleged misconduct of the former representative. Matt Gaetza Florida Republican.

The House Ethics Committee on Wednesday declined to release a report documenting their extensive investigation of Gaetz, president-elect that of Donald Trump candidate for attorney general, according to multiple reports.

Rep. Michael Guest, the Mississippi Republican who chairs the committee, told reporters that “there was no agreement from the committee to release the report” after the panel voted on its release Wednesday afternoon.

The committee investigated allegations that Gaetz was part of a scheme that led to the sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl. In June, the committee said it was investigating whether Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and illegal drug use, accepted inappropriate gifts, and sought to obstruct government investigations into his conduct .

Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged.

He resigned from Congress shortly after President-elect Trump announced him as his choice to become the next attorney general upon his return to the White House in January. Guest previously said the committee only has jurisdiction over current members of Congress, but that some members of the Senatewho will be responsible for confirming Gaetz, requested the publication of the report.

Casten told reporters earlier Wednesday that if the committee did not release the report, he would present a privileged resolution when it was released, according to a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Politico journalist Anthony Adragna.

“The allegations against Matt Gaetz are serious. They are credible. The House Ethics Committee has spent years conducting a thorough investigation to get to the bottom of this. This information must be made available so that the Senate can provide the advice and consent required by the Constitution.” ” Casten said in the release.

Casten’s resolution would require a “vote of the full House of Representatives on the release of the Gaetz report.”

Republicans currently hold a 220-213 majority in the House, meaning at least a handful of Republicans should join Democrats by voting for the publication of the report.

Rep. Susan Wild, a Pennsylvania Democrat who is a ranking member of the committee, said CNN that it had been “agreed that we were not going to discuss what happened at the meeting”, claiming that Guest “betrayed the process by revealing our deliberations”.

“He suggested that there was an agreement within the committee not to release the report. This is false, to the extent that it suggests that the committee agreed or that we had a consensus on this Point. That’s incorrect. She said a vote was taken at Wednesday’s meeting and no one crossed party lines.

“I don’t want the American public or anyone else to think that Mr. Guest’s description of what happened today would be any sort of indication that the committee had unanimity or a consensus on this issue not to publish the report,” she said.

The committee will meet again on Dec. 5 to reconsider releasing the report, Wild said.

President of the House Mike Johnson previously said that he believes that the commission should not publish the report because it would “set a terrible precedent”.

“If someone is no longer a member of Congress, we are not in the business of investigating and publishing reports on people who are not part of this institution. The jurisdiction of the House Ethics Committee extends to sitting members of Congress,” he said, according to CNN.
