Could Trump run for president in 2028? This is what the US Constitution says

Former President Donald Trump was declared winner of the 2024 presidential election, making this his second time running successfully for the Oval Office.

So, will he be able to run again in 2028?

Legally, no.

The two-term limit was set after Franklin Roosevelt was elected to four terms as president. He died in 1945, shortly after his fourth term.

The 22nd Amendment states: “No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of any term for which a another person elected president must be elected to the office of president more than once.

Constitutional amendments can be repealed, but it is a difficult process. Any proposed amendment to the Constitution must pass the United States House of Representatives and Senate by a two-thirds majority. It will then have to be ratified by three-quarters of the 50 states.

Trump may not even want to run again in 2028.

He was inconsistent in his comments about the possibility of running again. In September, Trump said he would not run again in 2028 if he lost the 2024 election. But in May, at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting, Trump talked about running for a third term.

“It’s been an incredible journey, and it’s very sad in a way because we’ve done all these (rallies) and this is the last one,” Trump said at his final rally on Nov. 5 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Trump is 78 years old and will be 82 in 2028. Voters have already spoken concerns about his age.
