Mycology, the study of fungi, is essential for diagnosing fungal infections, which are increasingly common and can be life-threatening. Fungal diseases affect more than a billion people worldwide and cause more than 1.5 million deaths each year. In Malaysia, an estimated 1.93% of the population suffers from serious fungal infections each year, accounting for over 590,000 cases. Among these, recurrent vaginal candidiasis is particularly prevalent, with more than 500,000 cases reported each year. Fungal infections are especially dangerous for immunocompromised people, such as those with HIV/AIDS, cancer patients, and people hospitalized in intensive care units.

Malaysia’s tropical climate creates an ideal environment for mushrooms like Aspergillus, Cryptococci, And Histoplasma. Despite the growing need, mycological diagnostics lag behind fields such as bacteriology and virology, with many fungal infections remaining undetected, due to limited diagnostic capabilities and antifungal resistance monitoring.

“Lablink’s mycology reference laboratory is here to unlock the potential of comprehensive mycology testing – we will serve as a vital hub, providing healthcare providers with access to specialized expertise, cutting-edge technologies and testing capabilities complete. said Dolly Lim, CEO, Lablink Medical Laboratory.
