The Meadow Gold plant in Honolulu, seen in April 2020. Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii LLC, reportedly the state’s last dairy processor, plans to lay off more than 130 employees.

Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii LLC, considered the state’s last remaining dairy processor, plans to lay off more than 130 employees.

The Waipahu-based company filed a notice with the Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, saying it was discontinuing “substantially all of its warehousing and distribution operations.”

The company said it plans to work with other companies such as Hawaii Foodservice Alliance LLC or Pacific Provisions Hawaii to provide warehousing and distribution services.

A total of 179 employees are affected by the notice, with the first termination date scheduled for January 15. In an attachment, 131 job titles of employees scheduled for permanent layoff are listed by island.

Affected locations include Waipahu on Oahu; Hilo on the island of Hawaii; Lihue, Kauai; and Kahului, Maui.

Positions that will be laid off range from commercial truck drivers, warehouse supervisors and associates, loaders, merchandisers, sales representatives and pricing coordinators, among others.

They also include a costumed character and a singing character, presumed to be Meadow Gold’s mascot, Lani Moo the Cow.

Local 142 of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union represents seven of the employees on the island of Kauai.
