Long lines and ‘unfounded’ bomb threats at AZ voting sites

PHOENIX — Election day in Arizona is finally here! Polling stations officially opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m., with vote counting expected to begin after 8 p.m.

ABC15 is here to bring you the latest Election Day news overnight and in the days to come as votes are counted in Arizona and across the country.

3:00 p.m.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said there was unsubstantiated reports of bomb threats at four specific locations in Navajo County.

“These are unfounded bomb threats,” he said at an afternoon news conference. “We have no reason to believe that voters or polling places are in danger. »

Fontes said he believed the threats came from a foreign enemy “namely Russia” but declined to provide further details, saying he had only just been briefed on the information.

“We have no reason to believe anyone is in danger,” he said.

2:52 p.m.

The Navajo Nation President’s Office tells ABC15 the Navajo Nation is working with ASU’s Native Vote to attempt to file an extension request before 3 p.m.

Long lines continue in Tolleson, so be prepared if that’s where you plan to vote.

Maricopa County’s latest Election Day voter count

2:00 p.m.

We’re seeing more polling places with long lines this afternoon as turnout appears high across Arizona.

1:50 p.m.

We are receiving more and more reports of long lines at Maricopa County polling places. The video below is from ASU.

1:25 p.m.

Maricopa County election officials are seeing an increase in voters at lunchtime, with some of the busiest locations being college campuses: Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Fitness Center, the Mesa Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College.

So far, more than 127,000 voters have registered.

The county anticipates up to 375,000 voters on Election Day.

Longer lines are expected from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Some voting centers in the Valley are seeing very long lines, but citizens are reminded that if they wait in line, they will be able to vote.

The latest tally of voters on Election Day in Maricopa County:

12 p.m.

Maricopa County election officials reported an average wait time of 2 minutes at voting centers this morning. A “small handful of centers” have reporting lines that can last up to 30 minutes.

Mid-afternoon should have the shortest lines.

The highest demand is expected to be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. You can check wait times at locations.maricopa.vote.

Maricopa County is providing an update on the total number of voters who cast ballots on Election Day.

Maricopa County provided the first update on how many voters have cast ballots today so far.

7:35 a.m.

Maricopa County is reporting high traffic at several voting sites across the Valley this morning, including:

  • Free Air School
  • Anthem Civic Center
  • Chandler-Gilbert Community College
  • Desert Hills Community Church
  • Indian Bend Wash Visitor Center
  • Memorial Presbyterian Church
  • Paradise Valley Community College
  • The surprise town hall
  • Tolleson Civic Center

7:30 a.m.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes announced a 9 a.m. news conference to discuss how the election process is going so far.

7:20 a.m.

A viewer reported to ABC15 that there were delays this morning at the voting site at Aire Libre Elementary School, north of Phoenix.

The Maricopa County Registrar’s Office told ABC15 that a poll worker with the ballot initially locked himself out of the building and the problem should be resolved shortly.

7 a.m.

Some Mohave County viewers initially reported problems opening polls in Mohave County.

ABC15 contacted the Mohave County Elections Department, who said all issues had been resolved and voting was proceeding normally.

6 a.m.

Polls are officially open in Arizona.
