Abbott Elementary Cast to Appear in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

THE highly anticipated crossover between ABC “Abbott Elementary School” and FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” just got bigger. While it was already revealed that the characters from “Sunny” will appear on “Abbott” this season, Variety has confirmed that, as part of a two-episode event, the teachers from “Abbott” will also appear on “Sunny” to hang out with the Gang at Paddy’s Pub.

Earlier this month, “Abbott” creator and star Quinta Brunson and “Sunny” star/co-creator Rob McElhenney revealed that the two shows would join comedic forces for a very special of “Abbott” (which Brunson had already hinted at). at San Diego Comic-Con). The mash-up made sense, given that both shows are set in Philadelphia and both air on Disney-owned networks. (“Abbott” is produced by Warner Bros. TV.)

The cast of “Sunny” – McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito – have already shot their scenes for “Abbott” episode 409, in a storyline that will take up a full half-hour. Olson revealed the crossover twist Thursday on the red carpet at Variety Women Power Event.

“It was a lot of fun,” Olson said of filming the “Abbott” episode, adding, “And they’ll be jumping into our world in a few weeks, which is very exciting. So it’s been really fun for our two actors to be able to do, them a cable show and us a network show.

From “Abbott” star Lisa Ann Walter (who plays Melissa Schemmenti, a tough-talking second-grade teacher) said Variety asked Brunson to write her scenes with Olson’s Dee Reynolds, we asked what requests the “Sunny” star made.

“I was just excited about them getting evil,” Olson responded. “They can’t do that at school; they can do that at the bar.

The “Sunny-on-Abbott” episode will air first, and executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker revealed that Day’s character will have a “pretty big storyline.”

“At first, it was a bit of a joke that the two series would cross over. On paper, it looks like it would be a real tonal hodgepodge,” Schumacker said Variety about breaking history. “But then Rob and Charlie came into our writers room and we hammered out some real general ideas. From there we emailed beat sheets and then an outline. They were super playful about everything. All those concerns we had about the shows’ tones clashing with each other were put to rest the second we started filming with Charlie.

It’s unclear, however, what exactly the “Sunny” team has in store for the “Abbott” characters in their series. Writing for season 17 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” took place this fall, and production on the season’s eight episodes has just begun (with a view to returning in 2025). “Sunny” has had to deal with the busy schedules of stars, including Olson in the new ABC hit “High Potential” and Howerton in the Netflix series “Sirens.”
