Habitat for Humanity Unveils Permanent Home for New Jersey Veteran and His Family

PERTH AMBOY, New Jersey (WABC) — An American veteran and her family have a new forever home in New Jersey.

Greater Middlesex & Morris Habitat for Humanity held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Perth Amboy to unveil two-family homes.

Also present at the ceremony were the 40 students from Timothy Christian School in Piscataway who volunteered to help build the house.

“We all did it together. It was definitely a bonding experience,” Alyssa Marino said.

Former Army medic Mylcaryz Dellossentos, who spent nine years in the military, her husband Hilton and three school-age children will be moving into their very first home.

The couple spent more than 400 hours building their home using GMM Habitat’s private equity requirements.

The inauguration of a second home for a house built simultaneously was also unveiled for a civilian family of four over three generations.

The Velez-Comacho family, originally from the Dominican Republic, has three generations and grandmother Juanita will have a room to herself for the first time.

“We thank the volunteers who helped us realize this dream that my mother has had for 22 years,” said Penelope Velez-Camacho.

The Velez-Comacho family also spent more than 400 hours building their home with private equity requirements from GMM Habitat.

Both families received donated furniture and interior design services as part of the national television program “George to the Rescue.”

The Dellossentos family and the Velez-Comacho family have gardens that look out for each other and became friends after spending a year helping each other and Habitat for Humanity volunteers building the first homes each family owned.

“You help people understand that a house is more than walls and a roof, it is a place of comfort, security and possibilities,” said Mylcaryz Dellossentos.

The Dellossantos have been placed at the top of the organization’s list for a new home as there is more emphasis on ensuring veterans can afford to achieve the American dream.

“When we gathered here a year ago for Veterans Building Week, I remember these two homes were just beginning to take shape. And now we stand in front of these two homes as proof of what we can do when we do it together,” Liz said. DeCourse GEO from GMM Habitat.

Habitat says it plans to build four homes for veterans and their families in 2025.

The work you do is simply life-changing. We don’t just build houses and we build hope,” Dellossantos said.
