Eels decide to remove Mitch Moses contract options, what does that entail, Jason Ryles, contract news, free agency, rugby league news

The Eels reportedly intend to remove controversial contract clauses written into star halfback Mitch Moses’ deal.

2024 has been a very difficult year for Eels fans, but club officials are trying to bring some good news to their loyal supporter base by ensuring that Moses remains an Eel for the remainder of his playing career.

As it stands, Moses is under contract with player options in his deal for 2027 and 2028.

If things at Parramatta do not improve next season, based on his current contract, Moses could very likely become a free agent on November 1, 2025.

According to The Daily TelegraphThe Eels front office wants to secure Moses’ future at Parramatta by removing the player’s options from his deal and locking in the halfback long-term.

Moses is not the only Eel to offer multiple player options in his contract.

Halves partner Dylan Brown can claim to hold one of the strangest contracts in the NRL, with player options from 2026 to 2031.

If the Eels succeed in removing options from Moses’ deal, it will likely mean a pay rise for Moses if similar past situations involving rival clubs are to be believed.

Moses has been in exceptional form of late, even leading the Blues to a rare Origin series victory last year.

While the Eels have had a shocking two seasons since reaching the grand final in 2022, there is hope in the air given the club’s signing of new coach Jason Ryles.

Ryles had to make some tough decisions early in his tenure, including letting captain Clint Gutherson go, but there, in addition to Moses and Brown, there is enough talent in the building to turn things around quickly.

With Gutherson gone, Moses is a slight favorite to be named captain.
