ICC awaits PCB decision on hybrid model for Champions Trophy after India refuses to travel

KARACHI: The International Cricket Council has sought a response from Pakistan Cricket Board on the accommodation of Champions Trophy in a hybrid model following India’s refusal to travel to the country for the tournament.
THE PCB Sunday had confirmed having received an e-mail from CPI that India refused to visit the neighboring country.
“Unless the PCB decides to withdraw from hosting the Champions Trophy, the current plan is to host India’s matches in the UAE and the final in Dubai,” a source told PTI on Monday .
“The Indian Cricket Board has told the ICC that a hybrid model is only acceptable if the final is held in Dubai and not Pakistan,” the source added.

The CPC remained silent on Monday, without reacting to BCCI informing the ICC that he will not send his team to play in Pakistan in the Champions Trophy.
But according to sources, the ICC has asked the PCB to confirm whether a hybrid model – in which India’s matches and the final would be played in Dubai – is acceptable to them.
The ICC assured the PCB that under this arrangement it would receive the full accommodation fees and the majority of matches.
“The ICC has told the PCB that if it decides to hold the mega-event on a hybrid model, it will receive the full accommodation fees and the majority of the matches,” the source said.
However, if the PCB decides to pull out of hosting the tournament due to India’s refusal, the ICC may consider moving the entire event to South Africa, the source added.
Earlier, a PCB source said there was “no talk” of a hybrid model at the moment and would seek further clarity from the ICC.
“There is no question of having the Champions Trophy on a hybrid model system as of now,” a reliable PCB source told PTI.
“An email is to be sent to the ICC with the opinion of its legal department in which the Commission seeks clarification from the ICC on the Indian decision,” the source said.
“At the moment, the whole situation is being assessed by the CCP. No decision has been taken on the next step. Yes, the CPC is in contact with the government for consultations and guidelines if necessary,” he said. added the source.
Meanwhile, Pakistani media speculated on potential responses, including the Pakistan government advising the CCP to avoid playing India altogether or the CPC pursuing legal action against the ICC and BCCI in the Court of Arbitration of sport in Geneva.
India has not visited Pakistan since the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. The two teams only face each other in ICC tournaments.
