From stage to screen via the metaverse: crossing new artistic frontiers

As an artist, I have always been fascinated by how technology evolves and how it has changed art, how the stage gave way to cinema and how film gave birth to digital art. But today, in 2024, we are at the dawn of a new evolution: Metaverse. It’s not just a buzzword; it is a space that offers a new means of artistic expression.

My name is Victoria Chynoweth, I’m a Wall Street Journal bestselling author and TEDx speaker. My dual background in music composition and technology gives me a comprehensive understanding of how the Metaverse can both challenge and enhance the traditional art of music creation.

Today’s artists, regardless of their discipline, have the opportunity to elevate their craft to new heights by engaging in virtual worlds. For me, this journey has gone from traditional stages to using CDs, to digital platforms like Spotify, and now the Metaverse is the next frontier we should be paying attention to. But what does this mean for today’s creators? How can artists use their existing skills in this new medium and what opportunities await us in the virtual worlds being built around us? Come on and let me show you.

Leveraging Art Skills in the Metaverse

Over the past two years, the digital frontier has expanded rapidly and, for the first time, the boundaries between performer, audience and medium have disappeared. One of the most exciting things for artists is the ability to bring traditional skills into this digital realm. The virtual world doesn’t require you to abandon the skills you’ve honed over the years; this helps you amplify them. A painter, for example, can transform a static canvas into a living, breathing world where each brushstroke becomes an interactive experience for the viewer. It becomes even more interesting when dance performances, which had to be performed in physical spaces, can now be created in virtual realms where issues of gravity, space and time do not come into play.

Projects like MILC (Media Industry Licensing Content), a blockchain-based content licensing platform, provide a striking example of how the Metaverse can be leveraged by artists. During the Cannes Film Festival, MILC hosted virtual screening rooms where filmmakers and spectators interacted in real time despite being spread across the world. This type of digital experience opens up new possibilities for artists to create spaces where physical presence is no longer necessary. Now imagine making a film that audiences can sit down and watch, but also have the ability to access and interact with the content.

And it’s not just the film industry that’s embracing the metaverse. Fashion designers are hosting virtual fashion shows and visual artists are turning their pieces into NFTs so their audience can not only see but own a unique piece of digital art. Traditional fine arts also find their place in these virtual spaces. Metaverse Galleries allow artists to exhibit their work to a global audience without the constraints of geography. In these digital venues, artists can create fully immersive experiences where visitors browse and interact with art in ways that were once impossible.

The Rolling Stones Cultural Council is an invitation-only community for influencers, innovators and creatives. Am I eligible?

Audience Interaction in the Metaverse

Another exciting aspect of the metaverse is how it transforms the audience’s role from passive consumer to active participant. In traditional media, the audience sits back and watches. But in the Metaverse, the audience becomes part of the art itself. This creates a form of artistic expression that offers a lot of experience to the audience, involving them in the creation itself.

As artists experiment with the Metaverse, they discover that this new medium allows for an unprecedented level of interaction. By 2027, the metaverse is expected to account It accounts for 70 percent of annual growth in Internet media traffic, reflecting the growing trend of audience-driven art.

Why you should dive

Artists are already using this space to explore, experiment and expand their creative horizons. Whether it’s hosting concerts, creating virtual galleries, or using NFTs to sell their work, the possibilities are endless.

Trending Stories

As an artist, you already have the skills to navigate this space. Whether through digital performances or interactive storytelling, it’s time to start thinking about how your art can evolve in this infinite world. My advice is simple: start experimenting, start exploring, and let your creativity shape the future of artistic expression.

For my part, I can’t wait to see what happens next. So why am I telling you, an artist like me, that the Metaverse is something you should explore? Because it offers something special: a world where your creativity is not limited by physical space or traditional media. Whether you’re a musician, filmmaker, painter, or performer, the Metaverse has opened up new ways for us to connect with our audiences, expand our artistry, and even monetize our work.
