Deliberations made for the day; Adam Coy jurors to reconvene next week

The jury in the murder trial of former Columbus police officer Adam Coy has finished its week.

The 15-person panel deliberated Thursday and Friday but has not yet reached a verdict. Jurors finished around 3:30 p.m. Thursday and shortly after 4 p.m. Friday.

Coy faces charges of murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault in the December 2020 shooting of Andre Hill.

The jurors received all the evidenceduring the trial to determine Coy’s guilt or innocence. They returned to the courtroom several times Thursday and Friday to ask the judge questions, although it’s unclear what those questions were.

On December 22, 2020, Coy shot and killed Andre Hill, 47, who was unarmed at the time. Shy testified Mondaystating that he believed Hill was holding a silver revolver when he fired, but he later realized Hill was holding a set of keys.

Prosecutors argued that Coy acted recklessly the night he shot Hill. Coy’s lawyers argued that he acted in accordance with his training.

Legal experts say this case is complex.

“I would be surprised if they could come to a unanimous verdict here,” said Mark Weaver, who served as special prosecutor.

“This jury will probably be hung because it’s difficult to prove this charge and get all the jurors to agree that Officer Coy should not have fired that shot,” he said.

“It’s hard to find police-involved shootings where a unanimous jury says yes, we’re going to guess this cop, and we’re going to say he intended to kill this person. It’s very difficult to find juries that would do that.”
