Claim:

Infowars host Alex Jones has accepted the role of press secretary for President-elect Donald Trump.

Rating:

Unfounded

As United States President-elect Donald Trump won the November 2024 election against Vice President Kamala Harris, many people wondered who would play a role on his team. The name of conspiracy theorist and Infowars host Alex Jones had been fleet for press secretary to Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. in 2023, well before the election.

On November 7, 2024, Jones job a photograph of him brandishing a rifle in front of a large truck on X, with the caption: “I formally accept the offer to become President Trump’s new press secretary.”

There was no evidence that Trump offered Jones the job and it was possible that Jones was joking. The Trump campaign did not respond to an emailed question from Snopes about whether Jones had been selected for the role.

Jones’ post was likely a reference to Donald Trump Jr.’s 2023 comment, which suggested Jones for her post on her podcast, alongside far-right activist Laura Loomer: “There are a few people I want to appoint as press secretary for about a month. Two weeks to a month just to get these idiots back on track. their place… Alex Jones for about a month would put these people in their place because – not to say he’s got it all – but he’s been way more right over the last decade than anyone in our media. general public and I can say that with certainty and I I I’ll be criticized for that, but that’s the reality.

Jones too job follow-up, suggesting he had not received such an offer. Social media personality Ian Miles Cheong responded to Jones: “Can you imagine how funny that would be?” Jones followed this with “The world (sic) be at the next level”, suggesting that this was only a possibility.

A lot media reports speculated The Trump campaign’s national press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, was the favorite for the job.

Jones generated controversy in 2012 by falsely claiming that the Sandy Hook school shooting that year was a hoax. In answera number of Sandy Hook families filed defamation suits against him, resulting in a court-ordered judgment that he would have to pay $1.5 billion in damages. At the time of this writing, Jones’ personal assets were being liquidated and he was facing a court-ordered auction of Infowars’ assets to pay for damages. Jones, who has since admitted that the shooting took place, is appealing the rulings.

It’s possible that Donald Trump Jr. and Jones both joked that the conspiracy theorist would take on the role of press secretary. However, the Trump campaign has yet to make any official announcement, so we consider this claim to be unfounded.
