Dubuque High School football coach accused of embezzling $47,000 from independent league

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – The head football coach at Dubuque Senior High School is accused of embezzling more than $47,000 from an account belonging to the now-disbanded Dubuque Independent Football League (DIFL).

Darrell Moore, 39, of Dubuque, is charged with theft.

A criminal complaint states that between approximately November 2020 and until the end of the league in 2023, Moore, while president of the league, transferred money from the DIFL account to his personal account and a professional account bearing his name.

Moore also allegedly made electronic and cash withdrawals from the DIFL account, as well as debit purchases that do not appear to be associated with league business.

Records show the funds were used to make deposits into Moore’s FanDuel account and payments for things like his Roku account and purchases at grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants. He also allegedly used the funds at golf courses, to make hotel reservations and other online purchases.

In total, $47,360.52 in DIFL funds appear to have been misappropriated.

Money from the DIFL account was raised through annual fundraising efforts and was intended to pay for field rental, game officials, equipment storage and to be distributed among affiliated programs – Little Eagles , Junior Rams and Junior Mustangs.

When affiliated programs asked Moore for disbursement checks that he was instructed to send from the DIFL account, officials said Moore sent them checks that did not clear due to insufficient funds.
