Bay Area police and sheriff’s officials were preparing for any unrest that might arise during Tuesday’s vote or after election results are announced later in the week.

Demonstrations followed 2016 Oakland electionswith thousands of protesters taking to the streets. Some clashed with police after dark, with reports of objects being thrown and buildings vandalized.

San Jose Police said on social media platform that while officers would not be present at polling locations, they would coordinate with the Registrar of Voters to ensure the voting environment is safe. Police can respond quickly if necessary, authorities said.

Oakland police said in an email to the Bay Area News Group that they will provide additional personnel to facilitate any peaceful gatherings and respond to any crime-related incidents. They also said they are working with other law enforcement partners in case a regional response is needed.

Oakland authorities also advised people to plan their route to any events or gatherings in advance, contact police if they see any unusual or suspicious activity, and interact with others peacefully. and respectful.
