Cruz-Allred Senate race is costliest in 2024 election cycle

The race for the United States Senate seat in Texas is the most expensive this election cycle, with both candidates increasing and spending, tens of millions of dollars in the Lone Star State.

Holder Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has raised more than double his Republican contemporaries in the Senate with more than $86 million raised, based on the latest Federal Election Commission filings. The next closest Republican senator is Rick Scott in Florida, with just over $40 million raised.

Cruz’s opponent, Representative Colin Allred ranks third among Democrats in Senate races with just over $80 million raised.

Allred’s funds are placed behind Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown and Montana Sen. Jon Tester. They raised $91 million and $88 million, respectively.

Brown and Tester are each engaged in battles to retain their Senate seats.

Their opponents, Bernie Moreno in Ohio and Tim Sheehy in Montana, are each far behind their Democratic opponents in fundraising. Moreno’s latest filing shows about $24 million raised, while Sheehy’s raised about $26 million.

The more than $166 million raised by Cruz and Allred is among 34 Senate races that will be decided in 2024. They are spending those campaign dollars, too.

Allred spent more than $77 million to upset Cruz, who spent $77 million to defend his seat.

Democrats view this Senate race as one of their best opportunities to win a seat and protect their slim majority.

Where does this all-time race rank?

Cruz and Allred are engaged in the most expensive Senate race the state of Texas has seen, although Cruz is no stranger to having an opponent with a large war chest campaigning against him.

Democrat Beto O’Rourke spent more than $80 million in 2018 in his unsuccessful bid to unseat Cruz. Cruz’s campaign spent nearly $46 million that year defending his seat.

During the 2018 election cycle, contributions to Senate campaigns exceeded $1 billion for the first time.

Across the country, several Senate races have outpaced and overtaken Cruz and Allred.

In 2020, Georgia Democratic Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock each raised more than $125 million when they won the state’s two Senate seats over incumbents David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler.

Perdue raised $102 million, while Loeffler raised $92 million.

During this same electoral cycle, the current Jaime Harrison, chairman of the Democratic National Committee raised $132 million in his bid to unseat South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham. Graham, who successfully held the Republican seat, raised $112 million.

The Senate’s 2020 fundraising topped $2 billion.

The Senate fundraising lead belongs to Warnock, who defended his seat against Herschel Walker in 2022. The senator brought in more than $206 million, compared to Walker’s $73 million.

Overall, Senate candidates raised more than $1.5 billion in 2024.
