Postecoglou sends message to Spurs players after big Man City win | Soccer | Sport

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has issued a rallying cry to his side, urging them to show more consistency following their exceptional 4-0 away win against Manchester City.

Having overcome a dismal 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich before the international break, Spurs bounced back in spectacular fashion, leaving the Etihad Stadium in a jubilant mood thanks to James Maddison’s superb first-half brace.

The victory was solidified when Pedro Porro found the net shortly after halftime, with Brennan Johnson later adding the finishing touch to make it 4-0. Spurs thus ended City’s impressive unbeaten streak at home which had persisted since November 2022.

Reflecting on this remarkable result, Postecoglou said: “You don’t come to a place like this thinking that it’s probably going to be as compelling as it has been for us in terms of how we’ve handled (things ).

“Look, I’ve said it before, City test you in every way possible when it comes to football. You have to do a bit of everything – you have to defend, you have to work hard, you have to be disciplined, so you have to play soccer.

“I thought in all four areas we reached a very strong level today, where the players were really determined to make sure that after an obviously disappointing game last game, we got back to our core beliefs as a team. ‘team.

“Credit to the guys. I thought they were outstanding today because we knew from the first 10 minutes they were going to come out with fire. Obviously the four losses they had were to the ‘outside, so being at home, there would be an energy in the stadium.

“We kind of had to weather the storm, which I thought we did pretty well, and then we just progressed through the game.

“I’m so happy for the players to believe that they’re trying to play the way we want them to, and then you get a reward like that. I hope it helps our progression.”

Postecoglou was delighted with the way his Spurs team executed the game strategy and stressed the need to capitalize on their momentum. “I said during the week that I really thought we had progressed as a team,” he remarked.

“I think we’re a better team this year than last year, but we’ve had some real dips, to say the least, that haven’t allowed us to move up in terms of standings.

“But like I said, I’ve never felt like the players lose faith in what we’re doing. It’s very easy because there’s obviously a lot of noise when things aren’t going well.

“Today was kind of about doubling down on our football principles and we did that, and that’s important because they obviously have an incredible record here at home.

“So I don’t think it’s something to be blasé about. It’s significant. But I think it’s important for the whole group that we’ve achieved these standards before, it’s now about not to fall like we did in some matches.”
