CNN’s Keilar stunned by Trump’s choice of Matt Gaetz for AG

CNN anchors Boris Sanchez And Brianna Keilar discussed the president-elect that of Donald Trump shock choice for attorney general, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), with their panel on Wednesday.

“We’re starting to hear from some of his colleagues in the House and their reactions. Congressman Don Bacon of Nebraska, who was recently narrowly re-elected, told CNN, quote, “I really haven’t gotten any good feedback.” So take it for what it is,” Sanchez began.

“It’s worth noting that I think he probably speaks for many people on the Hill. And our panel with us again, Meghan Hays And Scott Jennings. I just want to play a sound clip of Kevin McCarthy in May 2024 and then we’ll talk about it while watching some live footage from Trump’s plane to Florida. It is Kevin McCarthy in May 2024 on why he lost his position as president,” added Keilar, before broadcasting the clip:

And I’ll tell you the truth, why I’m not a speaker is because one person, a congressman, wanted me to stop an ethics complaint because he had sex with a 17-year-old. An ethical complaint that started before I became a speaker. And it’s illegal. And I’m not going to put myself in the middle. Did he do it or not? I don’t know. But ethics takes care of it and other people are in jail because of it.

“He’s talking about Trump’s AG pick,” Keilar added.

Jennings replied: “Yeah. Well, I think it’s safe to say that opinions vary. And Kevin McCarthy probably won’t come. I mean, he’s been a McCarthyite, a strong Trump supporter and has obviously, I think, maybe even offered some advice on the transition. I probably didn’t advise much on this one.

“You know, something that Moskowitz said that honestly strikes me is that Gates is a smart person and he’s thinking of ways to blow people’s heads off here in Washington, D.C., which is probably something that Trump is attracted to in this case. So, you know, he’s not an idiot, you know, he’s someone who’s going to come forward with a plan if he can get confirmation I think. so what Moskowitz said is absolutely true 100%,” Jennings said.

“And it’s making everyone’s heads explode right now as we all watch this unfold in real time. And I’m sure we’ll have a lot more opinions on that,” Hays responded.

“Do you imagine the Democrats will approach some of the Senate Republicans who have already broken with Trump to try to dissuade them from voting for Gaetz? Sánchez followed.

“Yes. And I think there will be other people like Tulsi Gabbard and other intelligence officials that I think the Democrats will try to get. not confirmed,“Hays replied.

“However, I generally think Trump deserves a chance to build his government. I mean, some of these people are what you would consider conventional. Some are less conventional. He won. And I think he deserves a chance to build his government. And I think the Senate is going to give him some leeway on these issues because he’s the president. And these people are, I mean, you know,” Jennings continued as Hays added:

This is why we have a confirmation process. They don’t need it. But you have to appoint people and it’s the responsibility of the Senate to confirm them. He therefore has a chance to build his government. These people must now put forward their arguments, but it is up to the senators to confirm them. And I guess some of them won’t be confirmed.

“Well, it’s going to be a wild ride,” Keilar replied.
