The horse race for House GOP leadership began Monday after President-elect Donald Trump announced he had chosen New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik to be ambassador to the United Nations.

Michigan Rep. Lisa McClain and Indiana Rep. Erin Houchin have both launched bids for the number four position in House GOP leadership, their offices confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation, with Rep. from Florida Kat Cammack as well. announcing his candidacy.

Utah Republican Rep. Blake Moore — the current GOP vice speaker of the House — was reportedly weighing an offer, but announcement On Tuesday, he would instead seek re-election as vice president. As McClain runs for conference president, Missouri Republican Rep. Mark Alford has spear an offer for his current role as conference secretary.

It remains unclear who Stefanik will support as his successor, with McClain telling the DCNF, “I have been proud to serve alongside Elise in the Conference under her leadership and hope to earn her support.”

Stefanik took over as conference president in May 2021 after the Republicans ousted Liz Cheney, former Republican representative from Wyoming, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney who announcement his support for Vice President Kamala Harris in September.
