The horse race for House GOP leadership began Monday after President-elect Donald Trump announced he had chosen New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik to be ambassador to the United Nations.

Michigan Rep. Lisa McClain and Indiana Rep. Erin Houchin have both launched bids for the number four position in House GOP leadership, their offices confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation, with Rep. from Florida Kat Cammack as well. announcing his candidacy.

“Republicans enter President Trump’s second term with the momentum to fulfill their mandate to make America great again. To effectively communicate our vision, I am running for president of the Republican Conference,” Houchin told DCNF. “Having owned and operated a communications business, I know how to reach the right audience at the right time. The role of the conference chair is not to be in the spotlight; it’s about amplifying the voices of our members and providing them with the tools they need.

The Indiana congresswoman was one of 18 Republican lawmakers who request House Speaker Mike Johnson doesn’t want a complete repeal of subsidies in President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Stefanik took over as conference president in May 2021 after the Republicans ousted Liz Cheney, former Republican representative from Wyoming, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney who announcement his support for Vice President Kamala Harris in September.
