A 30-day burn ban was issued this week in York County, according to the county’s office of emergency management.

The burning ban, which went into effect Oct. 30, was issued due to record river levels, low groundwater levels and dry conditions throughout the region, according to a news release.

Any open burning in barrels, fire pits or on the ground is prohibited under the ban, including burning of trash, leaves, grass, twigs, trash, paper, vegetative matter or debris.

All fireworks, unless authorized in writing by local authorities, are also prohibited under the resolution.

Propane or gas stoves, grills and the use of tobacco products are still permitted during the burning ban. Campfires in state/federally approved campgrounds designed to confine and contain fire are also permitted.

Anyone who violates the conditions of the burning ban will be subject to an initial fine of not more than $100, not more than $200 for a second offense and not more than $300 for any subsequent offense. Visitors to the county are also subject to fines.
