Musk and Ramaswamy present DOGE vision, WSJ opinion article

It’s only been about a week President-elect Trump has officially tapped Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce federal government overload upon his return to the White House, and entrepreneurs are wasting no time figuring out how make deep cuts.

Musk and Ramaswamy wrote an opinion piece published in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, laying out their vision for DOGE. Here are five takeaways from the article about how the agency works:

1. Identify what to cut

Musk and Ramaswamy indicated they were already working with the Trump transition team to “hire a small team of small-government crusaders, including some of the sharpest technical and legal minds in America.”

“This team will work in the new administration in close collaboration with the White House Office of Management and Budget,” wrote the billionaires, who are volunteering their time to the project. “We will both advise DOGE to pursue three broad types of reforms at each stage: regulatory cancellationsadministrative reductions and cost savings”

2. Radical regulation

DOGE leaders said their decisions would be guided by the US Constitution as well as two Supreme Court decisions issued under the Biden administration, which together suggest that a host of existing federal regulations actually exceed the authority granted by Congress and should be removed.

“DOGE will work with legal experts embedded in government agencies, aided by cutting-edge technology, to apply these rulings to federal regulations adopted by those agencies,” the editorial said.

“DOGE will present this list of regulations to President Trump, who can, through executive action, immediately suspend enforcement of these regulations and begin the process of review and rescission. This would free individuals and businesses from illicit regulations ever adopted by Congress and would stimulate the American economy“.

3. Reduce the federal workforce

Musk and Ramaswamy say that with fewer regulations needed, agencies won’t need as many federal employees. Thus, many positions will be eliminated and DOGE aims to help affected workers find a position in the private sector.

RAMASWAMY SAYS SOME FEDERAL AGENCIES WILL BE “DERATED” BY DOGE WITH “MASS REDUCTIONS” AT THE TAP

“DOGE intends to work with agency appointees to identify the minimum number of employees required in an agency for it to carry out its constitutionally authorized and statutorily mandated functions,” they wrote.

“The number of federal employees to be eliminated should be at least proportional to the number of federal regulations canceled: not only would fewer employees be required to enforce fewer regulations, but the agency would produce fewer regulations once its scope of authority would be properly limited.

4. Save taxpayer money

DOGE co-leaders say they are focused on reducing government spending through their initiatives.

They plan to target billions “in annual federal spending not authorized by Congress or used in ways Congress never intended.”

5. DOGE is temporary

“Our primary goal for DOGE is to eliminate the need for its existence by July 4, 2026, the expiration date we have set for our project,” Musk and Ramaswamy wrote. “There is no better birthday gift for our nation on its 250th anniversary than to establish a federal government that would make our founders proud.”
