Gibbs and Davis commit to increasing transparency in Craven County education decisions

NEW BERN, N.C. — Craven County has elected two new members to its school board, with Darlene Gibbs and Amy Eastwood Davis poised to replace District 5 and 7 seats previously held by Naomi Clark and Kelli S. Muse .

Both Gibbs and Davis stressed the importance of transparency and communication as they prepare to take a stand. “Transparency for parents and staff,” Gibbs said, emphasizing his commitment to open communication.

Davis echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Listening to the concerns of parents and teachers.” She further expressed her belief that the current school board is not sufficiently addressing the concerns of parents and teachers.

The newly elected members won their seats early Wednesday morning and made it clear that keeping the community informed of board decisions was a top priority. “Better understand what the school board is working on,” Gibbs said. “Be more open and more public about the issues we face and the things we are trying to decide and improve for the county.”

Regarding the June decision to extend Superintendent Dr. Wendy Miller’s contract, Gibbs said, “Well, that’s something we’ll have to look at and see what the board, the new board, must think about it.” Davis added: “This should have been something that should not have been done before the new board came in, but that is out of our hands at this time.”

Both members expressed their dedication to their role and their community. “Be a strong voice for Havelock, for Havelock schools, students and staff,” Gibbs said. “I hope to speak for them and improve their daily lives.”

Davis said: “I want everyone to feel like they can come to me and know that their voice can be heard. I’m willing to go above and beyond to try to get to the bottom of their concerns. “

The next board meeting is scheduled for November 12 at 8:30 a.m.
