Norwich hit-and-run victim’s family speaks out

NORWICH, CT (WFSB) – A family is hoping police find the person who hit their father with a car and then drove off.

Rene Beaudette, 66, was the victim of a hit-and-run Tuesday evening on East Main Street in Norwich, near the Preston city line.

René’s daughter, Kimberly Beaudette, spoke on his behalf.

“I just want someone to come forward. If it was your father or your son or your brother, or anyone close to you, then you would want justice for your family,” she said.

René is in a medically induced coma at Hartford Hospital. He was flown there by Life Star on Tuesday.

“I love him so much. And I’ll do anything for him. And dad, I’m going to give you justice in this case,” Kimberly said.

Police said Rene was struck by the car around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Palmer St. and East Main St.

“I can’t imagine going home after hitting someone on the side of the road and going to bed and being able to sleep because I haven’t slept in three days,” Kimberly said.

Veronica Cordeiro lives near the accident site.

“All of a sudden I heard a big bang and screeching tires,” she said.

Cordeiro’s family called 911 and she ran to help René.

“Once outside, I didn’t see anyone. There were still cars passing him,” Veronica said.

Pamela Busey is another daughter of René. She said: “He’s someone you can’t live without. He is simply incredible.

René recently discovered he had stage four cancer.

“His doctor told him to get out, start walking, walk around the neighborhood. Do everything you can. So my poor dad does this, goes out for a walk, gets hit by a car and ends up on the side of the road,” Busey said.

René has a long way to go. He needs facial reconstruction surgery and has numerous fractures.

Busey also said, “I sit there and I hold his hand, I kiss his hand. I talk to him, but I don’t know if he can hear me or not.

At the accident scene, there are approximately 100 feet of skid marks and spray paint where René was struck.

Police said they were searching for the driver and information including surveillance video from neighbors.

Kimberly wishes there were cameras at traffic lights.

“They must be present at every traffic light. It’s absolutely absurd that they haven’t taken this into consideration and started this process,” she said.

These sisters want justice for their father.

They said, “Whoever did this will have to live with this for the rest of their life.” So would you rather tell someone what you did and get it off your chest or do you want to live with this for the rest of your life while you destroy a family?

Authorities are asking anyone with video or information about the incident to call Norwich police.

A GoFundMe is available to support the family.
