What does Kentucky Amendment 1 do?

Currently, the state constitution allows citizens 18 and older who meet certain residency requirements to vote. Amendment 1 proposes to add language “no person who is not a citizen of the United States shall be permitted to vote in the State” in sections 145 and 155 of the Constitution.

Voting in state and federal elections is already a federal crime, and several studies have confirmed that undocumented immigrants voting in elections are rare. Still, Kentucky is one of eight states where voters were asked this year for their opinions on non-citizen ballot measures.
