Apple yesterday announced Final Cut Pro 11 for Mac, ending the 13-year-old “X” brand. Title features include AI-assisted tools like magnetic masking and subtitle transcription – and they’re making waves in the creative community.

Designed to take “full advantage of Apple’s M-series chips,” the new Mac version of Final Cut Pro represents perhaps Apple’s most confident adoption of AI yet. Magnetic masking and subtitle transcription are presented as tools made possible only by Apple’s Neural Engine. Take a look at our guide to best video editing software for more options.

“In Final Cut Pro 11, editors can access two all-new AI-powered tools: Snap Masking and Captioning, Apple announced. “With Magnetic Mask, editors can easily isolate people and objects in a video clip without the need for a green screen or longer rotoscoping. This powerful and precise automatic analysis provides additional flexibility for customizing backgrounds. Shots and environments can also combine Magnetic Masking with color correction and video effects, allowing them to precisely control and style each project. And with Transcribe to Captions, captions can be automatically generated. the timeline using of a large language model trained by Apple that transcribes spoken audio.

The update has excited creatives, and many are already speculating that it could spell doom for some competitors. “MotionVFX is trying to charge around $40 a month for rotoscoping and Apple is offering it for free!” one Redditor comments, while another adds: “Yes, I’m canceling my MotionVFX subscription.”

Indeed, the update appears to continue Apple’s long tradition of “Sherlocking” small apps, that is, inserting their main features into its existing apps. But for those looking to add automatic subtitles to videos, it may not be time to upgrade to Final Cut just yet. One Redditor says Transcribe to Captions is *very* basic at the moment. Just basic subtitles/closed captions, not any type of solution to replace CapCut for those social media style videos.

Time will tell if Final Cut Pro 11 manages to bring the fight to their doorstep, but with its recent proposal takeover of Pixelmatorwe’ve previously speculated that Apple appears to be taking major action against Adobe now.

Final Cut Pro 11 is available today as a free update for existing users and for $299.99 for new users on the Mac App Store. New users can download a free 90-day trial of Final Cut Pro.
