The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984 and other books fly off shelves after election

(CNN) – “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood, a novel set in a totalitarian society, has was propelled to the top of Amazon’s best-selling books list following Donald Trump’s re-election.

Sales saw a whopping 6,866% increase, according to Amazon figures Thursday morning, climbing in a single day to third place from its previous ranking at 209. It currently holds the top spot in Amazon’s Literary Fiction and Political Fiction categories and ranked ninth in the Bestselling Books list from Barnes & Noble.

Former President Trump scored a victory against Vice President Kamala Harris in Tuesday’s election, securing a second non-consecutive term after her 2020 defeat.

One of the key issues in this election was reproductive rights, which concerned Trump because polls showed voters strongly favored Harris on the issue. While Trump said he would veto a federal ban on abortionhe sought credit for installing three conservative justices who tipped the scales of the United States Supreme Court and overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is set in a theocratic, male-dominated America of the future, where the U.S. The Constitution is suspended, the media are censored and women (the holder “handmaids”) are forced to give birth to children for the ruling class.

Many have exploited comparisons to Atwood’s classic in the run-up to the election, particularly on the topic of reproductive rights. Speaking on the high participation of women in the early elections, former Barack Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett told MSNBC that “women don’t want to be in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ despite exit poll results. Harris’ advantage among women did not exceed that of President Joe Biden in 2020 or that of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Atwood, a staunch defender of abortion rights, took X herself to publish a political cartoon before the elections which showed women dressed as servants queuing to vote and exchanging their uniforms for normal clothes as they exited the voting booth. After the elections, she job: “Despair is not an option.”

This is not the first time that his book has entered the political debate. Women dressed in the servants’ iconic white bonnets and red dresses have become a fixture at protests since Nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court the day after dissolution of Roe v. Wade.

Other works of dystopian fiction have also dominated the bestseller list. Novels dealing with similar themes of oppression, such as George Orwell’s “1984,” about omnipresent surveillance and rigid government control, and Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451,” about a society in which books are completely banned, saw a 250% and 333% increase in sales on Amazon, respectively.

The election also boosted downloads of some apps like Calm, a meditation app, which jumped 100 spots on Apple’s App Store on election night, according to a Calm spokesperson.

Calm gained attention on social media after airing ads offering viewers “30 seconds of silence” amid continued election coverage.

The best-selling book currently on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble lists is former first lady Melania Trump’s memoir, titled “Melania.”
