Chicago area hits 82 degrees Tuesday, breaking record set in 1999

The Chicago area hit a record high of 82 degrees on Tuesday, breaking the previous record set more than two decades ago.

Tuesday’s unseasonably warm weather surpassed the record high of 78 degrees set on Oct. 29, 1999, said meteorologist Mark Raztzer of the National Weather Service. The new record was set at 3:59 p.m. at O’Hare Airport.

The hot weather brought gusty winds, causing a red flag. The combination of high temperatures, strong winds up to 40 mph and low humidity could cause “critical fire conditions,” weather officials said. If a fire were to break out, weather conditions could cause it to catch and spread quickly. The red flag warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday.

“Conditions today are exceptionally good for the development and spread of bushfires,” Ratzer said. “No one should be out burning leaves today. These fires can spread quickly and burn hotter.

Residents in parts of northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana have been warned to avoid starting fires and use “extreme caution” when disposing of smoking articles.

Strong winds will persist through Tuesday evening while temperatures drop to the low 60s.

Hot weather and wind gusts of up to 45 mph will continue Wednesday with temperatures reaching the low 80s, but another record is unlikely to be broken. The October 30 record is 85 degrees, set in 1950.

However, the heat will not last as rain showers are expected to arrive with a cold front Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.

Thursday’s rain is expected to ease by midday, allowing visitors to get out of their homes, but they should prepare to bundle up as temperatures will drop to 50C in the evening.
